South Africa became a fully sovereign nation state within the British Empire in 1934 following enactment of the Status of the Union Act. The monarchy came to an end on 31 May 1961, replaced by a republic as the consequence of a 1960 referendum.
Afrikaners are a Southern African ethnic group descended from predominantly Dutch settlers who first arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652. Until 1994, they dominated South Africa's politics as well as the country's commercial agricultural sector. Apartheid was a system of institutionalised racial segregation that existed in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s.
In 1990, F. W. de Klerk, then president of South Africa freed Nelson Mandela from life imprisonment on Robben Island. Negotiations led to the creation of a democratic constitution for all South Africa. In 1994, the ANC achieved a majority in the country's first democratic election and Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa.
Leopard populations are declining and outside sub-Saharan Africa. In South Africa, leopards are found throughout the country.
